Trash summary(part1)

Trash is a book written by Andy Mulligan It is a story about 3 boys named Raphael, Rat, Gardo The story is set in the dumpsite The story begins when Raphael finds a bag while he was working at the Dumpsite picking up trash, Inside the bag was their wallet with 1100 peso, ID card, Key, map, old paper and photos of two girls. But what is the key for? Is the key for house or locker?

The Story continues when the police come to the dumpsite to find the bag that Raphael found. Police tell them that they will give the money if they find the bag. Raphael didn’t believe the police, so he didn’t tell the police that he found the bag. Raphael felt desperate because of the police so he went to Rat with Gardo.

Rat knows what was the key for, it was a key for the locker in the train station, and Rat knows the key because he uses to stay there. So they go to the station but they were really scared and nervous so they were really careful and quick. When they find the locker they open the locker and ran away quickly, but luckily there was no police and none of the lockers were smashed. Inside the locker they found the letter written "If found please deliver." Then the address: Prisoner 746229, Cell Block 34K, South Wing, Colva Prison, Also there was a name Gabriel Olondriz and code written in number. Moreover what is the code for? The story is going deeper and deeper.

One of the themes in Trash is Police Corruption and violence.  An example of this is when Raphael says "when the police get mean, you don’t want to be around"(page 29).  This means that the police can be violent if they become angry.  Another example is “But everyone knows not to trust too far”(page 12), this means don’t trust too far because they might be lying but the poor people don’t have power to complain, other examples are  "you playing games?"(Page13) it means that they are being disrespectful to poor people like to the rich people they wouldn’t say it disrespectfully. Moreover "you see the way he has touching you? He’s got you fix."(Page 17) which also means that police are trying to scare poor people with their power.

The second theme of the book is the dangers of poverty.  An example of this is when Raphael, Gardo and Rat go to train station to open the locker they said "We jumped early because you don’t ever want to be seen getting off the train.  If guards or even porters see you, you can get a real thrashing" (page 39).  By this he means that the boys are in danger of being beaten up by the guards if they are caught as people who work on the dumpsite are not welcome on the trains.  Another example is "Boys like us opening the luggage lockers?"(page 40) meaning they think they are stealing because the poor people is opening locker.

In conclusion poverty is really serious and they don’t have any power so they can’t complain to anyone. Also in chapter 6, not all of the mystery is solved, one mystery left is who is Gabriel Olandriz? And another one is what is the code for?
